University Orthopaedic Surgeons Helps South Knoxville Resident Get Back on Her Feet After Head-On Collision
While in the emergency room after a head-on collision, Bethona Gerth of South Knoxville was told she may never walk again. Three years and several surgeries later, the now-67-year-old has regained her mobility through rehabilitation and the help of Dr. Anna Wallace and Dr. William Oros of University Orthopaedic Surgeons at UT Medical Center in Professional Office Building F, located at 1926 Alcoa Hwy., Ste. 210.
After a severe car accident in July 2016, Gerth was brought to the emergency room at UT Medical Center, where she was seen by one of University Orthopaedic Surgeons’ fellowship-trained orthopaedic trauma specialists, Dr. Oros. He treated Gerth’s injuries initially and later referred her to Dr. Wallace, who took over her treatment to further Gerth’s recovery. The extent of damage to one of Gerth’s legs was so severe that she required multiple complex surgeries, but after many months of hard work in physical therapy and rehabilitation, Gerth has been able to walk using either a walker or cane so far in her recovery.
“In the hospital, when I first had my wreck, Dr. Oros told me he didn’t know if I’d ever be able to walk again,” says Gerth. “By the time I finished therapy, I walked out to my car using the walker—it was a good feeling.”
Prior to her accident, Gerth had sought the specialists at University Orthopaedic Surgeons for degenerative joint problems of the knee. She had successful knee replacement surgery with Dr. Michael Eilerman previously, and she believes her continued trust in University Orthopaedic Surgeons has been well placed.
“I’m doing so well that my doctors have my follow-up appointments down to three and six months,” adds Gerth. “I’ve come a long way in the last year and am very thankful that God gave all my beloved team of orthopaedic doctors the skills to fix that leg.”
